Hunt Description

Hunt Australia has been the pre-eminent Buffalo hunting safari operator in Australia for over 24 years. We have earned our reputation by securing the best hunting areas, enabling us to supply the largest possible, truly wild and free Buffaloes. During 2002 season our hunters averaged 100 SCI points per buffalo which was an outstanding result.  In 2003 season we averaged 101 SCI points and in 2004 we averaged 202 SCI points.

The hunting for big old bulls just gets better every year.  Dorothy Harber from Dallas Texas took our biggest buff of the 2004 season with a 111 SCI points monster.  Look at our website to see the photo of this huge bull.

Our current Buffalo hunting area is located in East Arnhemland, approximately a 1-hour air charter from Nhulunbuy, on the Gove Peninsula of the Northern Territory . The hunting areas are best described as super-remote. There are no roads in the hunting area, no cattle, no fences and no people except at the local Aboriginal village where the airstrip is located. We often see hundreds of buffs in single day hunting.

You will be accommodated at our comfortable tented base camp, which is situated on a beautiful billabong. Our camp is fitted out with modern facilities including 240 volt power supply, hot showers, flush toilets, comfortable beds, linen, daily clothes washing, etc. Your meals will be prepared by our camp cook, and will consist of the highest quality food available (a combination of fresh and frozen produce flown into camp). Any special requests can be catered for – make sure that you ask in advance, as it is a long way to the corner store.

Hunting is normally conducted by cruising the edges of the numerous huge floodplains and billabongs in our specially equipped 4WD vehicles. Once a suitable old bull is located, the final stalk is then conducted on foot. After your trophy is down, your guide will photograph your trophy and skin it for mounting as per your requirements.

As the land dries out, usually during July and August, we are able to access previously inaccessible areas where the monster Buffaloes reside. Access to some of our new unexplored areas is by crossing one of the billabongs or lakes by boat, to a waiting 4WD vehicle. Truly exciting hunting in the “real” Australian outback.

We are confident that you will be able to take an excellent Buffalo trophy on a 5-day hunt. Most clients in 2004 took their trophy on the first or second day of their hunt. Many clients choose to utilize any extra days hunting with their guide for additional Buffalo , Wild Boars or Fishing. Excellent fishing is available right from our base camp.

Hunting Season & Prime Hunting Dates

We conduct our Buffalo hunts during the dry/cool months of May to September. Best time to hunt Buffalo is during the driest and coolest months of June, July and August. Traditionally, the largest trophy each year is taken during July or August (107 SCI in 2000, 108 SCI in 2001, 107 SCI in 2002, 109.5 SCI in 2003 and 111 SCI taken in May 2004.)

Recommended Equipment & Clothing

The Buffalo available in our hunting areas are much larger than African Buffalo, and are much more difficult to kill. They become aggressive and are very dangerous once the shooting starts. We strongly recommend that you use only a large caliber rifle with only heavy premium grade, soft point ammunition. A scoped 375 H&H is the minimum requirement, however a 416 Remington or 458 Winchester Magnum or similar caliber is perfect for the job.

Lightweight, dark camouflage cotton clothing is recommended with a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and comfortable walking boots. Insect repellant and sunscreen are also suggested.

Craig Boddington,

"For more than a decade I have entrusted all of my South Pacific hunts to
Bob Penfold of Hunt Australia Pty. Ltd.;  and his New Zealander chum and
partner, John Berry of Hunt New Zealand Safaris.  Not all of my hunts have
been successful;  some South Pacific animals are just plain difficult!
That's okay;  that just means I have excuses to go back-and go back I
will.  Nobody knows the South Pacific like Bob Penfold and John Berry, and
nobody has better access to the full range of South Pacific game.  All of
my hunts with his outfit have been enjoyable, from good camps with good
guides, and always with plenty of game.  Most of them have resulted in
exceptionally good trophies-but all have yielded good memories of great
hunting experiences.

I have hunted with Bob Penfold in Australia, from the
from mountains of Victoria to the Cobourg Peninsula and into the farthest
reaches of the Outback;  for banteng, buffalo, wild boar, sambar, hog deer,
and more.  I have hunted with both Bob Penfold and John Berry in New
Caledonia
, where the roaring season for rusa deer is truly the world's best
deer hunt.  And I have hunted with John Berry in New Zealand for red stag,
Himalayan tahr, fallow deer, and more.  The good news is I still have work
to do in their part of the world, and I can't wait to go back.
